 | What is Johannelund?
Johannelund is a university college that is known for its excellence in theological education. The college's theological programs of study are tailored to meet the needs of those planning to enter the ministry in the Church of Sweden or the Swedish Evangelical Mission (SEM - or EFS in Swedish). Johannelund is one of Sweden's three university-level institutions that prepare candidates for ministry in the Church of Sweden. But studies at Johannelund provide a solid foundation for any profession where theological and religious studies are important - such as ministry in other denominations, of course, but also a career in a wide variety of non-ordained ministries, including education, missions and social service.
Our theological program offers a unique combination of theological and pastoral courses, as well as mentor groups. A healthy cooperative program with Uppsala University means that students at Johannelund study a portion of their degree at the Department of Theology of Uppsala University. Johannelund has a splendid environment for study, with a well-stocked library, a locally renowned cafeteria and comfortable dormitory facilities. In addition, Johannelund works closely with the local church, Lötenkyrkan, in many of its activities.
A number of other courses of study are also possible at Johannelund. A Bible School is held each term, as are many other courses offered in cooperation with SEM's adult education colleges ("folkhögskolor"). One such course program is Theology for Life, directed to people who have an interest in growing as a Christian and in developing their ministries at home, at work, in society, and in the local church.

 | A Ministerial Education
Serving as a minister today requires a solid theoretical and practical foundation. Johannelund aims to provide both. Special attention is given to considering what questions people are asking today, and how people's spiritual and religious needs manifest themselves in our culture. Johannelund is committed to seeing an active church life and the realities of a future ministry in focus throughout the student's degree work.
We at Johannelund feel it is of the utmost importance that future ministers know how to support and work with lay persons in the church. Our commitment to biblical and theological studies is motivated by the desire to equip students with a depth of understanding in their Christian faith, so that they can articulate for themselves and convey to others a vital and reflective faith. Studies in pastoral theology, Christian education and counselling provide students with further tools for meeting people within the church and in the community, in time of joy and in times of sorrow.

 | International Students
Johannelund Theological Seminary regularly receives applications from foreign students to degree programmes at Johannelund. While we warmly welcome the presence of international students, we wish to inform prospective students of the following:
a) The language of instruction for undergraduate studies at Johannelund is Swedish. Non-Swedes who apply to a Swedish undergraduate degree programme must first demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in the Swedish language. An adequate knowledge of Swedish is exhibited by passing the national language examination (TISUS). Information about this language examination can be obtained from the Swedish Embassy in your country.
b) Swedish universities and colleges do not offer financial aid or scholarships. International students must therefore have sufficient financial resources to cover all living expenses for the duration of the degree programme.
c) Students who are already enrolled in a degree programme at a non-Swedish theological seminary and wish to come to Johannelund as an exchange student are governed by separate regulations and are encouraged to contact the Student Dean directly for further information..
Finally, please note that Johannelund’s pastoral degree programmes are intended primarily to provide training for pastoral service in Sweden. On average there are three to four international students enrolled at Johannelund each year, but these students have generally already lived in Sweden, speak Swedish and intend to minister in Sweden upon completion of their degree.
It is far from certain that Johannelund’s programmes offer adequate training for ministry in exceptionally different settings. If you are preparing for the ministry in another cultural situation, we advise you to apply first to theological programmes designed for pastoral ministry in that particular context.
